About

Matthew Stone is Professor in the Computer Science Department and Center for Cognitive Science at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

He completed his PhD in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1998 under the supervision of Mark Steedman. His dissertation was awarded the Beth Prize.

He served as program co-chair of NAACL 2007, IWCS 2015 and SemDIAL 2016, and as general chair of SIGDIAL 2014. He was a co-organizer of NASSLI 2016 at Rutgers and the 2024 Design Justice Labs Global Humanities Institute at the University of Pretoria.

He served as Graduate Program Director for Rutgers CS from 2017-2019 and Department Chair from 2019-2023.

His research has been funded by grants from NSF, AFOSR, and NEH and by gifts from Electronic Arts, Amazon, and the Mellon Foundation.
